How Do I Remove Plastic Cowling Under The Windscreen On A 2003 Galaxy

I want to remove the plastic cowling under the winscreen to check if the drainage holes are clear of leaves\rubbish.

How do take the cowling off without damaging it

2 bolts hold the wipers on, where is the other bolt.

 

Do I need to use a screwdriver to prise the cowling away from the windscreen?

Correct, remove that first! You then need to remove the wiper arms and the plastic panels all then pop off, you are reasonbly unlikely to do it without breaking them though so unless you really need to I wouldn't bother. You should be able to get to the drains with just the scuttle removed though, the rest of the trim won't give that much more access as there is metal work under them anyway.

The scuttle is below all that upper plastic. Leave the wipers on and open the bonnet, at the back you'll see a rubber seal - lift that up and off. You can then see the scuttle panel that runs the width of the engine bay directly below all the upper plastics - its actually easy to miss as its huge but yes the whole thing will slide out! There are two bolts at each end (under foam blocks if they are still there) and one more in the center. I normally remove the airbox to aid sliding it out and it makes it much easier to reinstall correctly (there are 3 metal groves it sits in).

Just to add to what Mirez has said it proberbly worth changing the pollen filter while the scuttle is off im guessing your getting musty smells coming through the heater vents? :)

I cleaned out a bucket of mud from my Golf under the plastic cowling after it was blocked and water began to come into the cabin.

 

Just want to do some preventative measures.

 

Sounds easy to do on the Galaxy ....., un do 3 bolts and slide out the plastic cowling.... are you sure that I don't need to unbolt the wipers like the Golf ?

there are the three bolts (arrowed) you need to remove, to drag the bulkhead extension out to allow you better access to the scuttle area....... ok right, LEAVE THE F' IN WIPERS ALONE! you dont need to touch them :D the two outer arrows also point towards the areas behind the suspension top mounts where the scuttle drains are that you looking for, so just to make sure you understand

You need to read more carefully. You asked how to remove the plastic cowling under the windscreen and to do that you need to remove the wipers - I answered the question you asked.

 

You then need to remove the wiper arms and the plastic panels all then pop off, you are reasonbly unlikely to do it without breaking them though so unless you really need to I wouldn't bother. We then gave you an alternative for what you need to do and for that you don't need to remove the plastic panels to remove the scuttle tray and so wouldn't remove the wipers.

My mistake chaps - Apologies to Gregers and Mirez - Owe a pint to each of you.

 

I thought you had to remove the plastic cowling on the windscreen to get access underneath it (like the Golf 2001 TDI). This is not the case on the Galaxy!!!

 

Got the message - leave the wipers alone and undo the 3 bolts...lol

When I've done mine in the past I normally remove the airbox (one screw and a pipe clip) as it allows the panel to slide out to that side which (IMO) makes it much easier! Good luck!
